Throughout history, all sorts of strange contraception techniques have been used as a way to control childbirth. Some of them were ridiculous, like wearing weasel testicle amulets, while others were dangerous, like when woman flushed out their lady parts with Lysol in the early 1900s.
In fall of 2014, medical staff members of a hospital in the Colombian town of Honda were stunned when they discovered a young woman had shoved a potato inside her vagina as a form of contraception. According to Colombia Reports, the 22-year-old woman complained of abdominal pains after the potato had been inside of her for almost two weeks. The plant had begun to sprout roots inside of the woman’s vagina.
“My mom told me that if I didn’t want to get pregnant, I should put a potato up there,” the unidentified woman told Colombian news site HSB Noticias. “And I believed her.”
Colombia Reports’ Craig Corbett suggests that the incident with the misinformed woman is a sign of the nation’s growing problem of insufficient sexual education, resulting in a “void of information and high levels of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.”
According to Colombia Reports, the potato was removed from the woman and it should not have caused any lasting damage to her body.
