Today is a sad day for America. More than 50 people have lost their lives after a gunman opened fire at a popular nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
In addition to the 50 people who lost their lives, more than 60 are now in hospital with serious injuries. This occurred late last night at the Pulse nightclub, an establishment that is known to be frequented by those within the LGBQT community.
The shooter, who had previously pledged allegiance to ISIS, was responsible for the attack. He was killed in the ensuing gun battle with police. ISIS has since claimed responsibility for the devastating attack. Omar Mateen worked as a security guard, and had access to high powered firearms including an assault rifle and a pistol.
Omar Mateen entered the nightclub and starting firing immediately. Not many people understood what was happening until it was too late- as the music was so loud that people thought the gunshots were part of the music.
When Omar Mateen stopped to reload, people had about ten seconds to get out of the nightclub as quickly as possible. A few people took advantage of this opportunity. Omar Mateen tried to escape but was cornered by police. At this point he went back into the nightclub and took the people who were still inside hostage.
After Omar Mateen had gone back inside, police surrounded the nightclub, and used an armored vehicle to smash through the wall of the nightclub and gain entry that way. This took Omar Mateen by surprise, and he was later shot and killed.
During the initial gun battle when Omar first exited the club, an officer almost lost his life. He was hit in the head with a bullet fired from Omar Mateen, but his Kevlar helmet saved his life. He is now suffering from an eye injury as a result of the ricochet.
