Gabourey Sidibe is far from the typical Hollywood female look. Her figure and skin color would normally deter her from movie execs, but she has managed to enter the vain hole that is Hollywood and continued to thrive. Here’s how she’s managed to thrive in the industry.
She’s best known for her role in “Precious’ which was Oscar nominated. Her performance was a real tear-jerker and was definitely inspiring for millions of people who saw the film. The story revolves around Sidibe’s character who is impregnated twice by her own father! Beyond all that, her character is illiterate and suffers abuse from her own mother.
Since that role which showcased her range and ability to act, she is now on the hit show Empire on FOX. On the show, she was in a sex scene that turned heads due to how rare we see such scene with plus-sized actors. “I, a plus sized, dark-skinned woman, had a love scene on prime-time television … I was nervous … But I felt sexy and beautiful…” she said about the scene.
While she has suffered many criticisms and downright hateful posts from social media users, it’s nothing new for her. She has a really sly way of addressing her haters. One tweet read, “to people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on my way to my dream job last night #JK”.
She’s well aware of her size and the HEALTH issues that come with it, but she will not allow someone to tell her that she’s not attractive. She has already lost 50 pounds and continues to strive for a healthier lifestyle. That’s something we can cheer on!
She even has a sense of humor on her side that is not easy to have when people are throwing shots at you left and right. If you follow her on Twitter, you know how she gets. She even once tweeted out during the Golden Globe Awards that “My underwear huts…Need more booze!”
With that type of confidence, humor and poise, she’s bound to continue becoming a Hollywood star that will eventually pave the way for several other actors and actresses that are shamed for their body image.
