The Oldest, Tallest, Widest and Biggest Trees in the World

The Oldest Tree in the World: Old Tjikko (9,550 Years Old)

The main reasons we are living is because of Trees. They are the main source of oxygen.
This article plays a tribute to numerous trees which have directed to survive and prosper over thousands of years.
The Old Tjikko is is currently the oldest single-clonal tree in the world. It is estimated to be 9,550 years old. This is a Norway spruce. This elegant spruce is located on the Fulufjället Mountain. This mountain is in Dalarna province in Sweden. It was discovered by Leif Kullman who is a professor of Physical Geography. The tree has been nicknamed “Old Tjikko” after his dog.

This tree is 5 meter (16 feet) tall. Its height might not wallop you as the oldest known living organism. But don’t let its size fool you! The age of the tree was determined by carbon dating of genetically matched plant material collected from under the tree, not by dendrochronology, or counting tree rings. Over thousands of years this fella has successfully adapted to every climate change that has affected the area in which it dwells.
It’s considered that the motive why this tree has survived for so long is due to two processes:
  • Vegetative cloning
  • Layering
Vegetative cloning:
During this the trunk of tree can die every few hundred years, but the root system can live on for thousands of years.
It occurs when one of the branches touches the ground and eventually “turns into a root”.
Scientists have also located several other trees in the area, all dating to be 8,000+ years old – truly stunning!
