Man Leaps To His Death After Discovering Something Just 30 Minutes Earlier

On Feb. 21, the Department of Homeland Security released new immigration enforcement guidelines, including more aggressive deportation policies.

That same day, in photos seen below, a Mexican man leapt to his death from a bridge at the main San Diego-Tijuana border crossing after being deported for the third time from the U.S.

Guadalupe Olivas Valencia, 45, jumped from a bridge at the El Chaparral border crossing about 30 minutes after his deportation, notes the BBC. Valencia was found severely injured, and died shortly after at a nearby hospital.

The AFP reported that Valencia seemed “anxious after being expelled to a city where ‘he knew nobody,’” a friend of his noted, according to the Daily Mail.

Valencia was divorced and is native to the Mexican state of Sinaloa, known as a hotbed of crime circling the drug trade.

“The faithful execution of our immigration laws is best achieved by using all these statutory authorities to the greatest extent practicable,”

Department of Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly wrote in a memo released Feb. 21, reports The New York Times. “Accordingly, department personnel shall make full use of these authorities.”

“When you tell state and local police that their job is to do immigration enforcement, it translates into the unwarranted and illegal targeting of people because of their race,

because of their language, because of the color of their skin,” said Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project.

According to the BBC, an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently live in the United States.
