Federal authorities arrested Syed Raheel Farook, the brother of San Bernardino terrorist Syed Rizwan Farook on Thursday, as well as his wife Tatiana and her sister Mariya Chernykh
Mariya Chernykh is married to a man who is awaiting trial for joining Farook in aiding terrorists in 2011-2012. After much investigation, officials discovered that Farook’s neighbor, Enrique Marquez, partook in a fake marriage with Chernykh to keep her in the U.S. Syed and his wife Tatiana attempted to make Marquez’ and Chernykh’s union look valid by serving as witnesses to the fraudulent marriage and assisting them in opening a joint bank account. Marquez was later arrested in December for his involvement of plans to carry out terror attacks with Farook in 2012.
The Hill reports:
All three were charged with federal conspiracy, marriage fraud and false statement charges. The charges against Syed Raheel Farook and his wife carry maximum sentences of five years in prison. The ones against Chernykh, which also include perjury and marriage fraud, could send her to jail for up to 25 years.
U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker said
“Today’s arrests open a new phase in the process of bringing to justice all individuals who allegedly committed crimes that were uncovered during our exhaustive investigation.”
Though there has been progress in this investigation, terrorist cells are still growing within the U.S. and we’re not seeing much action until after an attack takes place. This reality is very concerning for many Americans who are fearfully waiting to see if their town will be the next target of Islamists.
