This is the Llullaillaco volcano in Argentina. Unbeknownst to many, this mountain has incredible historical significance. It was a very important religious site for the ancient Incan people. This civilization used the mountain as an altar of sorts, as they brought children to the top of the mountain and left them to freeze as a ritual sacrifice.
In 1995, researchers discovered one of these frozen children in prime condition. They nicknamed her “Juanita,” and took her back to the lab to study her. What they found out about this mummified human is stunning.
She can be seen in an exhibit at the Museo Santuarios Andinos in Peru. She has also been nicknamed “The Ice Maiden.”
Because of the ice, she was perfectly preserved. Even the clothes she was wearing were still bright and had not faded at all.
Genetic analysis confirms something very interesting. There is a genetic link between the Incan people and the Ngobe of Panama.
Scientists found these amazing toys with her. The Incans believed that to be sacrificed was a great honor, as they would be transported to realm of the gods upon death to live forever in paradise.
She will never live again. But she has breathed life into an ancient and forgotten people, so much so that it’s almost as if we can see the Incan people in incredible detail, across the vast frozen tundra of time.
