#1 A Perplexing Disorder
At the young age of 14, Gemma Walker was diagnosed with both anorexia nervosa and bulimia. The two serious eating disorders should not be taken lightly, and if we see Gemma’s case, it became a serious threaten to her life.
#2 Hours To Survive For Weighing Only 63 Lbs (Roughly 29kg)
She had a mere weight of 63lbs when she was 14. The doctors told Gemma’s parents that she would have only 48 hours to live if her critical condition is not being treated.
#3 Her Life On The Outskirts Of Death
Her entire journey of her recovery, Gemma was admitted to the hospital three times. One was for emergency care, and the rest two of them were for long-term psychiatric care, as well as re-feeding admissions. The early stage of recovery was rather scary and a complete 360 from her previous state. Her parents, totally heart-broken by the condition of her daughter were providing her adequate care. Her skin was packed tightly around her bones.
#4 Eating Was Not Easy
In the process of her recovery, she often suffered from binge-eating and “refeeding syndrome” which makes her to consume food excessively in one sitting. She could consume around 6000 calories in just 20 minutes enabling her to pass out and hallucinate. In the early phase of her recovery, Gemma was not dedicated to her program. She used to fool the doctors to believe she was getting better and putting on pounds by wearing light gym weights under her clothing.
#5 The Road To Complete Recovery
After seven years of hard struggle, Gemma, now 22, got a speedy recovery of tripling her initial weight of around 88lbs (40kg). According to people, she was over her anorexia and was healthier now but who knows about the worst stage she was dealing with. She had undergone a complete lack of eating to mass overconsumption.
She credits her parents by saying “I also have my beautiful parents to thank, they literally been through everything with me, it’s only now that I realize what incredible, loving parents they are. I am the happiest I’ve ever been now, it’s such an amazing, surreal feeling.” Gemma’s father told her to write a goodbye letter to her anorexia. She left the envelope in her bottom drawer for six years and finally got out of it in December 2014.
#6 Gemma’s Full Recovery
At the age of 22, she has left out her severe disease and on the way of celebration as well as the launch of her new beauty product business. Her story is a truly heart-wrenching and an inspirational one. Gemma has shared the photos of her skeletal form to be a source of inspiration for others to make the necessary changes to live a healthier life..
She said it was really tough for her to look back at the photos not much physically but her emotional side. She looked at each photo and remembers exactly how she felt or what was behind that photograph.Gemma’s father was tormented with pain by seeing the pictures of his daughter’s diminished figure whenever he does so.
